Memorial trail to remember victims of conflict
The lives of those who perished in conflict are being
remembered with a memorial trail.
The trail was officially opened at a sombre ceremony with
the unveiling of a new sculpture of a sail, with the image
of a World War One soldier cut out of it, at an emotional
ceremony in the memorial gardens off Horndean Road,
Emsworth.
The trail is made up of four smaller sail sculptures
throughout the village leading up to the gardens where the
memorial remembers all those who have lost their lives in
wars.
The idea for the trail came from Emsworth Community Board
which funded the £10,000 project from a government grant.
Havant Borough Council public art officer Gerry Wall said:
'It was a very moving ceremony.
'In the village we have a bus shelter memorial and St
James's Church has a list of the names of people who have
died at war but people here felt there should be more to
remember those who have died.
'This is traditional but with a modern feel and gives a
quiet place to sit and reflect.'
The Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, Mary Fagan, unveiled the
sculpture at the ceremony.
